Chhattisgarh's Ground Water Agency, overseen by the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), plays a crucial role in monitoring, managing, and conserving groundwater resources in the state. The state is divided into different hydrogeological zones, with key formations like weathered and fractured rocks and semi-consolidated Gondwana sediments serving as important water-bearing sources. The groundwater in the region is primarily tapped for agricultural and domestic use.

The state's annual groundwater resources have been estimated at approximately 12.42 billion cubic meters (BCM), with a net availability of 11.63 BCM. However, a significant portion of the state faces groundwater quality issues, including contamination from fluoride, iron, nitrate, and, in some areas, arsenic. Chhattisgarh also has an active artificial recharge program to combat the growing demand and stress on groundwater resources. This initiative includes various structures such as percolation tanks, check dams, recharge shafts, and rainwater harvesting systems to enhance groundwater replenishment.
