Tripura has both surface water and groundwater management entities overseeing water resources in the state.

For groundwater management, the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) has assessed and managed Tripura's groundwater resources. The state experiences a varied hydrogeology, with aquifers mainly occurring within the Tipam and Dupitila formations. Groundwater is generally found under unconfined conditions in these formations, and deeper zones show semi-confined to confined characteristics. The state's overall groundwater extraction is low, with all 59 assessment units categorized as "Safe," meaning extraction levels are sustainable.

For surface water, the Tripura Jal Board, established under the Tripura Jal Board Act, 2020, is responsible for water supply and sewerage systems, particularly in urban areas. The Board aims to streamline water supply services and control the wastage of water. As the state faces drinking water shortages, this body enforces regulations to ensure sustainable water use​.
